Pulling Military May Lead to Papua's Separation: Defense Minister

5 September 2019 20:42 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu recalled a statement issued by fifth Indonesian president Megawati Soekarnoputri, who in 2004 talked about the dangers of withdrawing military support from Papua which could lead to the region parting ways from Indonesia.

According to Ryamizard, Megawati mentioned the statement in a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Defense Commission; words that he holds strong to this day.

“A thousand changes of the region’s governors will see Papua remain. But once the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) are withdrawn, [the region will liberate itself] the next day,” said Ryamizard Ryacudu today repeating Megawati’s words.

Megawati’s argument is what bewilders Ryamizard in response to the public pressure demanding Indonesia’s military be pulled from the eastern region of Indonesia.

He argues that the region, especially following the massive demonstrations, has been used by several separatist groups and armed rebellions that want yearn for Papua to separate itself from Indonesia.

The Defense Minister says attempts to break away from Indonesia are always responded by military force in several regions. “Ideally, it should be done persuasively. But if that fails, a military approach is needed.”
