BNPT: Campus Radicalism Mainly Targets College Freshmen

30 August 2019 10:28 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Chief Suhardi Alius warned academic administrators to pay close attention to radicalism that might happen within campus environments. He also asked university rectors to register students that might be involved in radical activities.

“One example is college freshmen. That is an entry point,” said Suhardi in a public lecture at the University of Padjajaran in Bandung, Thursday, August 29.

According to Suhardi, the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education had been requested to act upon such threats. He also suggests the BNPT will take over the cases if campus administrators are unable to handle it themselves.

He further explained that youths are a demographic that is prone to be influenced by radical ideas considering that these people have yet fully matured.

The BNPT chief said alternate access points of radicalism can either come from religious activities, programs held in the houses of worship, and also the internet.

“Please, provide mentors who are moderate,” said Suhardi Alius who remains silent about the campuses that could be targeted by radical groups as it would prevent parents entering their children to any university.
