Jakarta's Reaction in Facing Civil Lawsuit on Pollution

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration announced that it would coordinate with a number of people that were also incriminated in the civil lawsuit filed against the government for the alleged lack of care on the city’s pollution.
“We haven’t discussed it since it is still in the stages of summoning the defendants, which many are local administrations and central government,” said the Head of Jakarta’s Legal Bureau Yayan Yuhanah to Tempo on Thursday, August 1.
Yayan was not inclined to comment any further as he must first coordinate the issue with other state instances.
“We cannot provide any statement yet since every defendant must coordinate with each other first,” he continued.
The first civil lawsuit hearing on the city’s air pollution was postponed yesterday. The chief judge Saifudin Zuhri said that both plaintiff and defendant did not fulfill the administrative requirement yet.
Previous reports suggested that a total of 31 activists filed a civil lawsuit on Thursday, July 4, over air pollution in the capital city. They demanded rights as citizens to get clean air.
The suit was addressed to the President, Environment and Forestry Minister, Health Minister, Home Affairs Minister, Jakarta Governor, West Java Governor, and Banten Governor.
