TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo reportedly gave his “blessing” for his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming, to run for the candidacy of Mayor of Surakarta (also known as Solo) after Gibran was deemed a popular candidate in a survey.
The survey in question was conducted by the University of Slamet Riyadi in search of possible candidates to run for the city’s mayor candidacy.
“[He has my blessing], I am a democratic person, what’s important is that they must be a responsible person in any job position or career choice. Independence and responsibility is what counts,” said the president on Sunday in his visit to Sukoharjo, Central Java.
The president asserts that he freely allows his own children to make their own independent decisions, which include both his sons’ entrepreneurship decisions in the culinary world as both Gibran and Kaesang each have established culinary brands.
“They refused when I drove them to manage or lead a factory. What else could I have done if forcing them doesn’t work too,” he said.
Jokowi mentioned that today’s youth are able to take the challenge as politicians and attributes this to the rapidly changing world.
