TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Winangun Geophysics Station in Manado City, said that as of 08:04 local time there were 87 aftershocks that followed a major earthquake of magnitude 7.1 that hit North Maluku on Sunday night, July 7.
"These aftershocks are still happening around the first earthquake's location," the station's chief of data and information Edward H. Mengko said in Manado, Tuesday.
According to Edward, out of the dozens of recorded aftershocks, three were quite noticeable.
Significant earthquakes such as those that occur between the waters of North Sulawesi and North Maluku are almost always followed by aftershocks to achieve stability.
"To achieve that stability, it must continue to release energy in the form of more earthquakes," he said.
On Sunday night at 22:08, a tectonic earthquake rocked the western sea area of Ternate City.
The earthquake epicenter is located 49 kilometers below the seabed and 133 kilometers west of Ternate City, North Maluku Province.
