TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police stated that the investigation of the May 21-23 riots, or called May 22 riot, was almost complete. The results of the investigation will be announced together with relevant institutions.
"The progress is almost 90 percent and the handling is quite comprehensive," Police Headquarters' spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said in Jakarta Tuesday, July 2.
Dedi said the police will reveal the details of their investigations together with the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), and the Ombudsmen of the Republic of Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Komnas HAM commissioner Choirul Anam asked the police to immediately announce the results of their investigation, without waiting for other institutions.
Anam said the public is waiting for the police's explanation about the nine civilians who were killed during the May riots, as well as cases of violence that were committed by both the rioters and members of the police force.
Anam said if there are pieces of evidence of violence committed by members of the police, then the Indonesian National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian must immediately carry further investigations and take action on those members. "So that everything is out in the open," Anam said on June 30.
