TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) will start producing in Indonesia in 2021. The production capacity is targeted to reach some 70,000-250,000 cars per year.
The types of vehicles Hyundai will produce are SUVs, MPVs, hatchbacks, and sedans.
Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto said his party would encourage investments in the electric car industry by providing tax holiday facilities. The establishment of the factory is estimated to absorb labor by around 3,500 workers.
Airlangga added that Hyundai had confirmed their commitment to immediately start investing in Indonesia. He believes the factory will become the South Korean manufacturer's production base to meet their domestic and export markets demand.
Harjanto, Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation and Electronics Industry (ILMATE), said that some of HMC factory's production in Indonesia will be used to make electric vehicles. Most of the production he added, will be allocated to meet demands from the Southeast Asian and Australian markets.
"The rest is for domestic need," he remarked.
