Human Rights Group Urges Police to Release May 22 Probe Report

1 July 2019 10:02 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commissioner of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Choirul Anam urges the police to publically announce its investigation report on the May 22 riots, without having to wait for the reports from his commission or the Indonesian Ombudsman or Ombudsman RI.

“Police’s report should be announced first as it presents a different consequence,” said Anam on Sunday, June 30.

Anam’s statement is directly responding to the Indonesian National Police’s announcement that it will reveal the investigation report together with the announcements from Komnas HAM and the Ombudsman RI.

“The joint investigative team will release the comprehensive report together with the Komnas HAM, Ombudsman, and the National Police Commission. This is for the sake of synergy,” said National Police Spokesman Brigadier General Dedi Prasetyo on June 26.

According to Anam, members of the public await for Police’s explanation on the nine civilians who died in the ordeal and the many acts of violence, either committed by the protestors or police members.

He also said that police members’ abuse of power, if proven, will enable Police Chief General Tito Karnavian to order an immediate investigation and take proper actions on the police member in question.
