Number of URL Spreading Hoax Doubles ahead of Election Verdict

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara recorded an increasing number of URL spreading hoax nearing the Constitutional Court’s verdict trial on election dispute, Thursday, June 27. The number was doubled compared to previous days.
“Since the last two days, it increases to 200 URLs per 6 p.m. (Wednesday),” Rudiantara told Tempo via a short message, June 26.
While per May’s end, he added, the number of hoax contents on social media was recorded at 100 URLs per day. However, the distribution of false information was lower than that of during May 22 rally.
Rudiantara recorded 600-700 URLs distributed hoax contents per day throughout May 22-24. The contents were filled with incitement and provocation.
Ahead of the court’s ruling, the hoax spread was not related to May 22 rally, but the hearings process in the court. Despite rampant hoax distribution, the minister ensured he would not yet restrict access to social media.
Rudiantara appealed to all communities to maintain security by not spreading hoaxes regarding the process of election dispute hearings. “There is no reason to spread hoaxes, make provocation or incitement as disputed parties in MK have stated they will accept any court’s ruling,” the minister asserted.
