Jokowi Wants ASEAN to Unite in Facing U.S.-China Trade War

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi held a closed meeting to discuss the preparations of his participation in the 34th ASEAN Summit in Thailand and the G20 meetings in Japan.
For the ASEAN Summit, which would be from June 20-23, Jokowi said Indonesia aims to seize opportunities for strengthening the national economy. Among the issues that Jokowi will bring to the ASEAN table is how the region will anticipate the U.S.-China trade war.
"We must invite ASEAN members to unite in anticipating the U.S.-China trade war; to maintain regional stability. It is important that we ask ASEAN to unite," Widodo said in Jakarta, Wednesday, June 19.
Other issues Jokowi plan to discuss include marine waste and expediting the establishment of peace in Myanmar's Rakhine State.
In the G-20, which would take place in Osaka from June 28 to 29, Jokowi will talk about global economic and financial challenges—particularly in the fields of trade and investments. The president will also talk about innovative measures to develop the digital economy and artificial intelligence.
"We also need to bring up inequality, infrastructure quality, human labor, and women empowerment," he said.
