TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Democratic Party chairman Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or SBY congratulated presidential candidate Joko Widodo or Jokowi and the running mate Ma'ruf Amin for winning the 2019 presidential election.
The former president said that he was grateful and relieved as Jokowi determined to become a leader and protector for all Indonesians during the latter’s press conference after the election result announced by the Election Commission (KPU).
“That's a leader’s commitment we’ve been waiting for and wished by the people to be actualized after this election completes, both by those who vote Jokowi - Ma'ruf and those who don’t,” said Yudhoyono in a nine-minute and 23-second video published on Tuesday evening, May 21.
According to the sixth Indonesian President, Jokowi’s remark becomes a good start to reunite Indonesians considering the country has dealt with the fierce contest and extreme polarization for almost a year. “This is a beautiful start that heals wounds of people and as reconciliation and reuniting Indonesians honorably.”
“Congratulations to Bapak Joko Widodo and Bapak Ma'ruf Amin for the people's trust given to you both to lead Indonesia for the next five years. I welcome and fully support your noble commitment to lead and protect Indonesians fairly,” said Yudhoyono, conveying his prayer to God to bless their ways in running their task.
Early Tuesday, May 21, KPU announced the final tally that shows Jokowi - Ma'ruf won the presidential election by 55.50 percent, while the opposition Prabowo - Sandiaga 44.50 percent.
SBY also lauded candidates his party supported, Prabowo - Sandiaga, decided to file a legal dispute in a constitutional way following the election outcome.
