TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Wiranto said that the government is forced to temporarily limit the number of features across social media platforms.
“The access to social media will be shut off to prevent negative contents from spreading across society such as fake information and provocative contents,” said Wiranto in a press conference at his office on Wednesday, May 22.
He asserts that the government intends to protect people from being exposed to hoaxes that have dangerous implications.
Wiranto said that the ministry will constantly provide updates on the arising condition happening in Jakarta.
As of now, a number of riots are taking place in several locations in Jakarta, which was arguably sparked by an unknown mob that forced their way into a police barricade in front of the Elections Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) on Tuesday, May 21. Apart from that, the mob attacked police using large stones and Molotov cocktails.
