Mass Organization Barred from Conducting Sweeping during Ramadan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin appealed to all Islamic-based mass organization to refrain themselves from carrying out sweeping during Ramadan.
“It is the best for us to keep ourselves from [holding sweeping],” said Lukman in the Ministry of Religious Affairs office, Jakarta, Sunday, May 5.
According to Lukman, every people is given a chance to train self and control desires during Ramadan. Thus, he hoped, people can respect each other in this holy month and not conducting actions that potentially cause social conflict.

“So if there is something considered to be out of place (violation), I hope no one act arbitrarily,” Minister Lukman underlined.
According to Lukman, mass organization members could file a report to a law enforcer if there is a violation. Because only the police and other law enforcement agencies have the authority to conduct sweeping, and that action must be carried out based on the law.
Lukman said that his ministry conducted dissemination to the mass organization on the matter ahead of Ramadan. Besides, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issued an appeal to maintain the sacredness of the fasting month. “So there will be no event that potentially triggers public uproar or social conflict in general,” he concluded.
