Investors Fret on Indonesia's Business Bureaucracy, Says Jokowi

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In a meeting with the Indonesian Notary Association at the Bogor Presidential Palace today, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo recalled Indonesia’s complicated bureaucracy in dealing with business permits, which was voiced by foreign investors.

“Prior to arriving in Indonesia, the foreign investors are really enthusiastic. But once they arrived, we all know how complicated it is dealing with permits in our country,” said Widodo on Tuesday, April 23.

According to the president, he often finds himself in a situation where many state leaders express their interest to invest in Indonesia. This follows Indonesia’s improved ranking from 120 to the current 72.

This problem, says the former Solo Mayor, shows that the government is sluggish in handling it since there are too many regulations that investors need to adhere to. He claims that it is what causes investors to finally abort from investing in Indonesia.

“It’s clear that the key for our country’s economic growth lies in two elements; plenty investments and plenty of exports. Those are the two key reasons,” the President remarked.
