TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo freshly inaugurated the construction of the Halal Park located in Gelora Bung Karno Complex in Jakarta.
This park is hoped to kick start the government’s plan to introduce halal districts in a number of regions.
“Halal Park as an embryo for the halal district that will also be built here, which will stand on top a 21,000 square meter construction expected to reach investment values up to Rp250 billion,” said Jokowi on Tuesday, April 16.
The Indonesian government is eyeing to use this project to lift the country’s halal industry from regional to the world level. This project is planned to combine the resources of the government, state-owned enterprises, and halal business entrepreneurs.
There were 140 million Muslim tourists with an online shopping value up to US$35 billion. Global Muslim tourists were also on the rise annually and are projected to reach 158 million people in 2020.
“Those are large figures, this means that there is a market segment that can be worked on. Especially considered that we are the country with the largest Muslim population in the world,” said President Jokowi.
