Anak Krakatau on Alert Status; 2,000 Sebesi Residents Evacuate

TEMPO.CO, Lampung - Some four hundred residents of Sebesi Island, located quite close to Mount Anak Krakatau, are finally willing to evacuate for their own safety. They had refused to evacuate, insisting to stay in their homes.
The entire island has now been evacuated. But earlier, many residents who insisted on staying at their villages.
"There are a total of 2,814 people in the island, and some of them didn’t want to evacuate," Tejang Village chief, Sugeng, said.

South Lampung Transportation Agency head Anasrullah said the residents began evacuating on a boat on Thursday afternoon, December 27. They arrived in Panjang Port in Bandar Lampung at 18:00.
"Thank goodness, all evacuees had arrived safely," he said.
The evacuees are currently sheltered at the Kalianda Indoor Tennis Court in South Lampung.
The government instructed the residents to evacuate following the increasing activities at Mount Anak Krakatau since Wednesday, December 26. The volcano continues to erupt and tremors had not stopped.
