Police: 408 Missing in Banten due to Sunda Strait Tsunami

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Until this morning, Monday, December 24, the National Police said 408 people in the Banten area were missing. They are some of the victims of the Sunda Strait tsunami.
The 240 people were found in the details of 179 dead in Banten and 61 dead in Lampung. There were 736 injured victims, with details of 506 people in Banten and 230 in Lampung.
“If there are victims (who have been identified), they will be immediately handed over to their families,” National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said on Sunday, December 23.
The National Police deployed the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team to identify the death toll from the Sunda Strait tsunami on Saturday night, December 22. The Mobile Brigade (Brimob) SAR division will be sent to Lampung if needed. “The Lampung Regional Police Chief says that for a while, this [the assistance] is enough,” he said.

The National Police sent ships and helicopters of the Water Police Division to evacuate victims, medical and health units, a Brimob company and a Sabhara company, heavy equipment, namely five excavators and five loaders to overcome the broken Serang-Pandeglang connecting road.
The National Police recorded 817 units, 11 hotels, one mosque, 245 motorbikes, 557 boats or fishing boats and 85 units of culinary stalls damaged by the disaster. Some police stations and police posts were also reported to have been damaged.
The Sunda Strait tsunami occurred on Saturday, December 22, at around 9:27 p.m. The tsunami was occurred due to an underwater landslide caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
