Thousands of Migrant Workers Arrive at Batam for Eid Homecoming

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of Indonesian migrant workers that are currently working in Singapore and Malaysia are starting to return home in the 2018 Eid al-Fitr homecoming from Batam, Riau Islands.
“Heading to the Eid al-Fitr, the people that arrive can reach 10,000 people and we predict half of them are migrant workers,” said Batam’s Class 1 Immigration Office Lucky Agung Binarto in Batam today.
However, immigration officials are still unable to differ the migrant workers that pass through immigration checkpoints, which is why they are unable to confirm its actual number.
“Whether they are migrant workers or not, we have yet to anticipate that since it’s very comparative and it’s not recorded in the system,” said Lucky.
Lucky said that the number of people arriving from Malaysia and Singapore at the Port of Batam Center have slightly increase compared to regular days, but is not a significant increase.
“We added the number of immigration arrival counters and departures from 10 to the now 12,” said Lucky. Lucky is optimistic that the service improvement will be able to reduce long queues at the immigration counters.
