TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The riot broke out by terrorist inmates in Police`s Mobile Brigade detention center (Mako Brimob) on Tuesday evening, May 8, allegedly triggered when Wawan Kurniawan, a terrorist convict of bombing case in Bandung, demanded his meal brought by his family.

“It’s Wawan who first provoked the riot, no one lead. The cause triggered over food dispute,” said Police’s spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto in Mako Brimob, Depok, Wednesday, May 9.

When Wawan shouted, Setyo said, the guards came to his cell. At that time, ten guards were on duty. “They attack and seized the guards’ weapon,” Setyo added.

Four officers made to escape, while five others died in the incident. One guard was also held as a hostage. "One detainee named Benny was also killed," Setyo added.

When the riot occurred in cellblock C, the counterterrorism squad Densus 88 was conducting an investigation to three members of the terrorist group Jemaah Ansharut Daullah (JAD); M. Mulyadi, Abid Faqihuddin, and Anang Rachman a.k.a Abu Arumi who were reportedly arrested while assembling Triaceton Triperoxide (TATP) bombs and planned to commit suicide bombs at several police stations in Bogor, West Java.

Setyo underlined that Wawan was not the leader of terrorist inmates. “Further investigation is needed related to Wawan’s motive on screaming over food that linked to the JAD examination,” he said.
