Jokowi Inaugurates ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo virtually inaugurated the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) in Labuan Bajo, NTT, on Monday, August 21, 2023. He reminded the participants of the serious threat of transnational crimes in the region as technology advances.
"With the technological advancement these days, transnational crime develops massively, in a more complex fashion, which prompts a more adaptive countermeasure, especially regarding terrorism, human trafficking, and illegal narcotics trade," said Jokowi via a video shown during the meeting.
Jokowi said that ASEAN ought to establish a sustainable collaboration, transfer of information, utilization of technology, and improve the capability and professionalism of law enforcers to prevent crimes. He hoped that the ministerial meeting could result in a responsive cooperation agenda. "To maintain a safe, peaceful, and prosperous ASEAN," he said.
The 17th AMMTC is held on August 20-23, 2023. The meeting is participated by the 10 ASEAN members ministers with their delegations, and delegations from three ASEAN dialogue partners, namely China, Japan, and South Korea.
Also attending is Timor-Leste as the observer, Chairman Directors-General of Immigration Departments and Heads of Consular Affairs Divisions of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (DGICM), and the Secretary General of ASEAN.
The meeting has several agenda, namely Preparatory ASEAN SOMTC for AMMTC, AMMTC Plenary, and AMMTC Consultation with dialogue partners.
At the end of the plenary meeting, six ASEAN members will ink an MoU to bolster the bilateral cooperation on the police force and transnational crime mitigation. In addition, the conclusion and the agreed position statement will be declared at the end of the meeting to be implemented post-meeting.
