Police Arrest 28 Suspected of 400 Motorcycle Thefts in Tangerang

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tangerang City Metro Police announced that they have arrested 28 people suspected to be linked with the 400 cases of motorcycle thefts that occurred between May and June this year.

"They committed their crimes in hundreds of locations in the Tangerang Regency, Tangerang City, South Tangerang City, West Jakarta City, and South Jakarta areas," Tangerang City Metro Police chief, Sr. Comr. Zain Dwi Nugroho said on Wednesday, June 28.

Of the 28 suspects arrested, Zain said 12 acted as the thieves, and five collected the stolen bikes. This network of motorbike thieves has been identified in different groups operating in Lebak, Pandeglang, North Lampung, East Lampung, and Tangerang.

During the arrests, the police confiscated three revolver-type firearms, 10 rounds of ammunition, five sharp weapons, Y and T socket wrenches, mobile phones, a motorcycle ignition/spark plugs, footage from CCTV cameras, and 19 stolen motorbikes.

Zain said that the Karawaci Police jurisdiction was where most of the crime took place with 128 crime scenes in total from May to June 2023. Other crime scenes were located within the jurisdictions of the Tangerang Police (90), Ciledug Police (79), Jatiuwung Police (66), Neglasari (30), Sepatan (2) TKP, Cipondoh (1), and Pakuhaji (1).

All suspects are charged with committing theft with violence and/or threat. "The prison sentence is 4 years minimum and 12 years maximum," Zain said.
