KPK to Keep Eye on Political Dynasties in Regions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission has said it will keep tabs on political dynasties in regions as they potentially lead to corruption. KPK deputy chief Basaria Panjaitan said this move was based on the results of the commission’s sting operations in the past.
“The KPK is keeping a serious watch on political dynasties,” Basaria told reporters at the South Jakarta Police HQ on Friday, March 2, 2018.
Basaria added the commission did not bar such practice so long as it was transparent and accountable.
The point is, Basaria said, that parents or children [of political dynasties] who run for office should refrain from corruption.
Basaria said KPK investigators would take stern action against state officials and regional heads implicated in graft cases and charge them with money laundering and seize their assets.
Political dynasties have been in the public limelight after the commission arrested Kendari Mayor Andriatma Dwi Putra and his father, Asrun, who ran for governor.
Both have been named graft suspects for allegedly taking bribes from private parties to fund their campaigns.
Andriatma succeeded Asrun as Kendari mayor after the latter reigned for two periods, or ten years.
