TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah's depreciation against the greenback to Rp14.132 per US dollar has contributed to the increase of gold and diamond sales prices, particularly in Bali's capital Denpasar and its nearby areas.

Nyoman Duarsa, a diamond merchant from Denpasar's Teuku Umar Street, said on that price increase reached 30 percent, antaranews reported on Thursday, September 3. Wedding rings, which are usually sold for Rp11 million, now sells for around Rp14 million.

Arif Bustan, a money changer manager in Kuta, said that since the US dollar gain up on the rupiah, the greenback has seen a transaction increase of up to 30 percent.

Since the rupiah's depreciation, money changers in Bali are filled with locals and tourists set on selling their dollar bills.

The increased transaction is experienced by almost all money changers in Kuta and surrounding neighborhoods.

"[The rupiah depreciation] is being used by locals and foreigners to keep their dollars and sell them when the rate is high," Arif said.
