BPOM Prioritizes on Illegal Goods in Upstream Levels

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Increased findings of off-standard food, cosmetics and traditional medicines over the years prompted the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) to eradicate illegal circulation in the upstream level.
BPOM chief Roy Alexander Sparringa said that starting this year, control and surveillance efforts will be done systemically; unlike in previous years where all monitoring measures stop at the distribution chain.
"Enough with the sweeping. This time we prioritize on the upstream levels, such as suppliers. Thereby, we will be able to unveil the distribution of these harmful substances. In addition, we will tighten border controls," he said on Monday, July 13.
He said that of Jakarta is the area with the most findings of illegal products, which numbered at 40,100 packages. Bandung, another major city, follows with 15,742 packages of illegal goods found.
These illegal products are suspected to be distributed to other regions in Indonesia. According to Roy, the BPOM has met with Jakarta Governor Basuki T. Purnama as well as related industry associations to follow up on these findings.
