Jakarta Police Detect Rising Drug Trafficking Ahead of New Year

12 October 2023 13:39 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Metro Jaya Police detected an increase in drug trafficking ahead of the New Year celebrations. The regional police stressed its commitment to eradicating illegal drugs.

“There is a lot of drug trafficking, especially ahead of the New Year, which is often used as an inappropriate accessory to celebrate the New Year,” Jakarta Metro Jaya Police Chief Inspector General Karyoto said at the Police HQ on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.

From July to September 2023, the police confiscated 251,433 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 82,211 kilograms of marijuana, and 5,920 ecstasy pills.

The police have destroyed the drugs, including 28,723 kilograms of crystal meth, 134.65 kilograms of marijuana, and 55,000 ecstasy pills confiscated by the Central Jakarta Police, using an incinerator belonging to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) at the yard of the Police HQ.

“The evidence destroyed today amounted to 200.67 kilograms of marijuana, 279.44 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 60,800 ecstasy pills,” Karyoto outlined, adding that it could save 1,859,390 lives.

He hoped that all elements would participate in preventing drug trafficking since the National Police could not work alone without cooperation in this operation.

Apart from those that have been destroyed, Karyoto claimed there are still 320.27 kilograms of crystal meth and 55,000 ecstasy pills seized by the drug task force of the Jakarta Metro Jaya Police in tandem with sectoral police and will be destroyed soon.
