TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe National Police’s Directorate of Narcotics Crime was determined to tighten surveillance on the trafficking of illegal drugs around Indonesia's entry points during the holy month of Ramadan.

Director of Narcotics Crimes Brigadier General Mukti Juharsa said that the increased surveillance was conducted in an effort to prevent the entry of illegal drugs into Indonesia, especially through the borders in Sumatra and Kalimantan. “At the entrance to Indonesia,” he said in an official statement on Tuesday, March 12

Based on the evaluation of drug network disclosures so far that often show illegal drugs penetrating the country through Malaysia, the National Police would strictly monitor the border between Indonesia and Malaysia.

Although drug trafficking usually decreases during Ramadan, Mukti stressed that the police were still taking precautions.

Aside from monitoring the border area as an entry point, Mukti said the regional and district police would launch operations or raids at night entertainment venues to prevent illegal drug trafficking.
