TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police Chief Inspector General Fadil Imran urged parents to routinely conduct urine tests on their children who are strongly suspected of having tried illegal drugs or being users.
Fadil emphasized that the urine test was a step to prevent drug abuse and drug trafficking in the capital city.
“So, if there is a child who seems to be a bit high, instead of waiting for him to be caught, it is better to check his urine regularly,” said Fadil when inaugurating the K9 (Animal Unit) Building in West Jakarta, Monday, October 31, 2022.
On that occasion, Fadil also responded to a cooperation plan with universities to carry out a urine test. “All groups of all ages, all professions, including the police, are obliged to protect themselves and their families,” he remarked.
Based on the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) data, cases of drug abuse in Jakarta rose from 1.8 percent in 2020 to 1.95 percent in 2021. Thus, Fadil asserted that preventive measures are necessary such as rehabilitating drug users, besides arresting dealers.
“The most effective way to combat these drugs is to break the chain between illicit trafficking and drug abuse. We must break the supply and demand,” said Fadil, adding that there is no point in those users being sentenced to jail.
