TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan expressed his determination in his X (formerly Twitter) account following the dashed hopes of running in the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election.

In a tweet on August 20, 2024, AB referenced a quote from R, stating, “There is only one country that is my country. It grows by becoming deeds and those deeds are my deeds -Rene de Clercq quoted by Bung Hatta in his plea in the Hague in 1928. Don’t give up and never give up for Indonesia. Bung Karno said: Keep the spirit, eagle :)”

Anies’ tweet came a day after the Ridwan Kamil-Suswono pair was officially declared as candidates for the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election. Supported by 12 political parties, including some that previously expressed support for Anies in the 2024 presidential election, this declaration significantly diminished Anies' chances of running for re-election.

The 12 political parties that have endorsed Ridwan Kamil and Suswono are Gerindra, Golkar, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), NasDem, National Awakening Party (PKB), Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), Democratic Party, National Mandate Party (PAN), Garuda Party, Gelora Party, Perindo Party, and the United Development Party (PPP).

Although the remaining party, PDIP, has not yet announced its candidate for the Jakarta gubernatorial election, its chances of nominating a candidate are slim due to a lack of seats.

The declaration of support for the Ridwan Kamil-Suswono pair was announced by Gerindra Party Secretary General Ahmad Muzani. “We, the political parties that are members of the New Jakarta Coalition for Advanced Jakarta, declare that we are nominating Muhammad Ridwan Kamil as a gubernatorial candidate and Suwono as a deputy gubernatorial candidate in the 2024 Jakarta special regional head election.”

Anies Baswedan has not yet given a complete response to the declaration.
