DPR to Hold Another Election in 2025 in Regions Where 'Empty Box' Wins

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) agreed to hold another regional head election in 2025 if the “empty box” wins the upcoming November election.
The decision was taken after a Hearing between Commission II of PDR, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the General Elections Commission (KPU), the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and the Honorary Council of Election Organizers (DKPP) on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
“The regions with only one candidate pairing that fails to obtain more than 50 percent, we agree to hold a repeat regional head election in the next year, in this case, 2025, as regulated under Article 54D of Regional Election Law No. 10 of 2016,” said the Head of DPR Commission II, Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tandjung, as quoted from Antara.
The parliament will further discuss the uncontested regional race with the Ministry of Home Affairs, KPU, Bawaslu, and DKPP in the upcoming Hearing and working meeting. “We will continue the discussion on September 27 for the draft of KPU Regulation,” Doli said before closing the Hearing.
Based on the data from Wednesday, September 4, KPU recorded 41 regions with uncontested regional elections where sole candidate pairings face an “empty box.” The 41 regions comprise one province, 35 regencies, and five cities.
Below is the complete list of regions facing uncontested elections in the 2024 regional head elections:

- South Sumatra: Ogan Ilir, Empat Lawang
- Bengkulu: North Bengkulu
- Lampung: West Lampung, East Lampung, West Tulang Bawang
- Bangka Belitung Islands: Bangka, South Bangka, Pangkal Pinang City
- Riau Islands: Bintan
- West Java: Ciamis
- Central Java: Banyumas, Sukoharjo, Brebes
- East Java: Trenggalek, Ngawi, Gresik, Pasuruan City, Surabaya City
- West Kalimantan: Bengkayang
- South Kalimantan: Tanah Bumbu, Balangan
- East Kalimantan: Samarinda City
- North Kalimantan: Malinau, Tarakan City
- South Sulawesi: Maros
