TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Anies Baswedan's chance to run in the Jakarta gubernatorial election has been widely talked about. So, what do the National Democratic Party (NasDem) and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) think about Anies' chances of running in the regional election?
PDIP Prioritizes Cadres
The PDIP Central Leadership Council (DPP) Chair Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok believed it would be difficult for PDIP to nominate Anies Baswedan in the Jakarta gubernatorial election.
According to Ahok, PDIP would prioritize its own cadres to run in the election. Ahok said his party would consider non-party candidates if there’s no chance for its cadres to run.
As is known, Anies Baswedan is a non-party actor despite running in previous regional and presidential elections.
Ahok said PDIP has a way of educating its cadres, including by instilling the party’s ideological values. "We are trained and educated (by PDIP),” the former Jakarta Governor said on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
Although the possibility of PDIP nominating Anies in the Jakarta gubernatorial election is not zero, it’s going to be difficult if the party already has an internal candidate.
"So, as far as I know, PDIP cannot nominate non-party individuals as long as its cadres are ready,” he said.
NasDem: It might be difficult for Anies Baswedan to advance
NasDem Party General Chair Surya Paloh signaled that his party would not nominate Anies in the upcoming Jakarta gubernatorial election. NasDem has joined the Onward Indonesia Coalition for the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s government.
"It might be difficult for him to advance in the Jakarta gubernatorial election," said Paloh on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
When asked what held back the party from nominating Anies Baswedan, Paloh said only the man himself could answer. He said some requirements must be fulfilled before nominating a gubernatorial candidate.
Surya Paloh then explained that, regardless of Anies, NasDem is positive about joining the government with the Onward Indonesia Coalition.
"What is clear is that Anies is NasDem's friend," said Paloh.
Previously, the Gerindra Party DPP Chair Sufmi Dasco Ahmad had revealed that several political parties are keen on joining the Onward Indonesia Coalition for the Jakarta gubernatorial election. He also mentioned the possibility of an Onward Indonesia Coalition Plus (KIM Plus) in Jakarta.
Gerindra Party Secretary General Ahmad Muzani said that intensive communication continues to be carried out with parties outside the coalition, including PKS, NasDem, and PKB.
Efforts to block Anies Baswedan from running in the Jakarta gubernatorial election emerged alongside the KIM Plus issue. Tempo Magazine reported the issue in its Monday, August 12 edition. The report also revealed the meeting between Paloh and President Joko Widodo which discussed, among others, the 2024 regional elections.
