TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A meeting between the Chair of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri, and the Chair of the Gerindra Party, Prabowo Subianto, is confirmed.
“Yes, there will be a meeting. God willing,” the Head of the PDIP Central Board, Puan Maharani, said on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the DPR Building.
However, Megawati’s daughter stopped short of detailing when the two political party figureheads would meet. She only said the meeting would be conducted “in due time.”
“There will be a meeting, yes. A goodwill visit is important,” Puan said.
The day before, the Secretary General of the Gerindra Party, Ahmad Muzani, also confirmed the meeting between Megawati and Prabowo. Muzani said the meeting will be conducted before President-elect Prabowo Subianto is inaugurated on October 20.
What are the agendas?
Both Puan and Muzani did not answer in detail about the meeting agendas between Megawati and Prabowo. “We’ll see (whether) there’s gonna be a discussion (on political agendas). But, at its essence, the meeting is a mere goodwill visitation,” she said.
Similar to Puan, Muzani mentioned that both party leaders would likely discuss politics, including the chance for PDIP to join Prabowo-Gibran’s government. “Just wait,” he said, as quoted from Antara.
Referring to the Tempo Magazine edition September 2-8, 2024, Megawati previously communicated with Prabowo after the Constitutional Court read its ruling No. 60/PUU-XXII/2024. The verdict paved PDIP's way to nominate a regional candidate independently.
Two sources, a PDIP official and a party leader at Onward Indonesia Coalition, said Megawati sent a special message for Prabowo Subianto on August 21.
In the message, Megawati said PDIP would not nominate Anies Baswedan for the Jakarta gubernatorial elections if Prabowo conceded to MK’s decision. At that time, parliament was attempting to overturn the court’s ruling.
That same night, Prabowo summoned his inner circle in the Gerindra Party; Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, Ahmad Muzani, and Sugiono to his residence. Prabowo said he would not support the ratification of the Regional Election Bill.
The next day, Dasco announced that DPR withdrew from ratifying the Bill.
PDIP, which previously thought to nominate Anies Baswedan, ended up nominating Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung and Rano Karno in the upcoming election. Both are PDIP cadres.
