TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi handed over Rp6 billion or US$382,000 bonuses each for the two Indonesian gold medalists at the 2024 Paris Olympics and Rp1.65 billion to the bronze medalist.

In his statement at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta today, Thursday, August 15, 2024, President Jokowi appreciated Veddriq Leonardo who clinched gold in sport climbing.

Jokowi expressed the same appreciation to Rizky Juniansyah who won gold in the men's 73-kilogram weightlifting event, and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung who won bronze in the women's singles badminton.

President Jokowi said the accomplishments bring optimism and hope for other Indonesian athletes to aim higher in international sporting events.

Jokowi also emphasized that the medals were achieved through valiant efforts, including talent identification, non-stop training, and the hard work of coaches and supporting teams of various sports branches.

In addition to the athletes, Jokowi also presented the coaches of gold medalists bonuses of Rp2.75 billion each and Rp675 million for the bronze medalist coaches.

The government has also prepared an appreciative bonus of Rp250 million for athletes who participated in the Paris Games.

The Indonesian government’s bonus for Paris Games athletes is the third-biggest among other participating countries, below Hong Kong and Singapore.

According to CNBC, Hong Kong promised US$768,000 or around Rp12 billion to its athletes. In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Hong Kong managed to clinch 2 gold and 2 bronze.

Singapore offered the next biggest bonus for gold medalists with US$745,000 or around Rp11.7 billion.

In contrast, major countries such as the United States, Germany, and Australia offered much less to their Paris Games athletes. The US provided US$38,000 for its gold medalists, while Germany and Australia offered even smaller bonuses at US$22,000 and US$13,000 respectively.
