2. Jokowi Launches MRT Construction of Tomang-Medansatria Line
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo officially launched the construction of the Integrated Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) East-West Line Phase 1 Stage 1 in the MH Thamrin area, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. The route will extend 24.5 kilometers from Tomang to Dukuh Atas, Senen, Perintis, and Medansatria.
He said that the construction of the MRT East-West Line was expected to contribute to Jakarta's development as a global city. The project, which includes 21 stations, is anticipated to be completed by 2031.
“With the completion of the MRT, Jakarta will truly become a modern transportation hub,” the President said at the launch event.
3. Tobacco Product Restrictions Potentially Cause Mass Layoffs, Indonesian Workers Union Claims
The Head of the Federation of Cigarette, Tobacco, Food, and Beverage Workers – All-Indonesian Workers Union (FSP RTMM – SPSI), Sudarto AS, said the Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024 on Health and the Ministerial Regulation on Tobacco Products and Electronic Cigarette Bill could potentially cause massive layoffs.
According to Sudarto, the tobacco products industry absorbs over 6 million workers, and the new regulation could affect them. “Around 6 million workers depend their lives on the tobacco products industry. Now, imagine if each of them has 2 kids, that’s 24 million who depend on their livelihood in this sector,” he said on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, in a press conference.
