1. Indonesia Climbs to 28th in Paris Olympics Medal Standings

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s medal count has risen to two golds and one bronze, bringing the nation to the 28th position in the 2024 Paris Olympics standings. The latest gold was clinched by weightlifter Rizki Juniansyah in the men’s 73-kg category.

According to the Olympics’ official site, as of 4:00 a.m. Indonesian Western Time (WIB) on Friday, August 9, the United States continued to dominate the medal tally with 30 gold, 38 silver, and 35 bronze medals.

2. Jokowi to Attend Environmental 'LIKE Festival' in Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi will attend an environmental festival dubbed the LIKE (Lingkungan or environment, Iklim or climate, Kehutanan or forestry, and Energi Terbarukan or renewable energy) Festival at Jakarta Convention Center, Central Jakarta, on Friday, August 9, 2024. Yusuf Permana, the Presidential Secretariat Deputy for Protocol and Media confirmed in a written statement.

The first LIKE Festival last year was held as part of the preparations for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change or the 28th Conference of the Parties or COP28 in Dubai. This year, COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November.

3. Indonesian Immigration Detains 2 Suspects of Human Smuggling to Australia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Immigration arrested two people suspected of being involved in human smuggling to Australia. The two, Indonesian citizens with the initials DH and MA, were immediately detained and named as suspects.

Immigration is also investigating the involvement of an Italian citizen, GA, Meanwhile, DH and MA are being held at the Class I State Detention Center in Central Jakarta. They are charged with Article 120 of Immigration Law with a maximum of 15 years in prison and a Rp1.5 billion fine.
