TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Directorate General of Immigration arrested two people suspected of being involved in human smuggling to Australia. The two, Indonesian citizens with the initials DH and MA, were immediately detained and named as suspects.

Immigration is also investigating the involvement of an Italian citizen, GA, Meanwhile, DH and MA are being held at the Class I State Detention Center in Central Jakarta. They are charged with Article 120 of Immigration Law with a maximum of 15 years in prison and a Rp1.5 billion fine.

The Immigration Intelligence and Enforcement Team of the Sukabumi Class II Non-TPI Immigration Office secured 28 foreign nationals and two Indonesian citizens handed over by the Sukabumi Police on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

They were found stranded on Muara Cikaso Beach, Sukabumi on June 29, 2024, by local residents and were suspected of violating immigration regulations.

The case was then transferred to the Immigration. "It was discovered from the investigation that they were heading to Australia from Cilacap Port on June 16, 2024, on a ship piloted by two Indonesian citizens with the initials DH and MA," said the Director of Immigration Supervision and Enforcement, Saffar Muhammad Godam, in South Jakarta, August 8, 2024.

On June 18, they were discovered by the Australian Border Force (ABF) and were asked to return to Indonesian territory using the ABF's Save Vessel.

"Then they were released in the Sukabumi coastal area," said Saffar.

The results of the investigation and analysis of Digital Evidence showed that DH and MA were involved in an organized network that smuggled the 28 foreign nationals to Christmas Island in Australia. They work under the order of someone named I.

"We are still looking for the mastermind behind this case,”  said Saffar. The Directorate General of Immigration also works with the Australian Embassy to dismantle the human smuggling syndicate.
