TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) reduced 555 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2023 by substituting coal with biomass (cofiring) in coal-powered power plants (PLTU), Antara news agency reported.

PLN IP President Director Edwin Nugraha Putra said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday, March 7, that the CO2 reduction came from the application of cofiring in 18 PLTUs, which utilized 478,741 tons of biomass and produced 509.54 GWh of clean energy.

He added that the company's commitment to helping the government implement the energy transition contributed to the success. Edwin said, "Throughout 2023, PLN Indonesia Power successfully reduced carbon emissions by increasing biomass as a substitute for coal."

The plants that have implemented cofiring until 2023 are PLTU Suralaya 1-4, Sanggau, Jeranjang, Suralaya 5-7, Lontar, Labuan, Pelabuhan Ratu, Adipala, Suralaya 8, Asam-asam, Sintang, Barru, Berau, Pangkalan Susu, Holtekamp, Bengkayang, Labuan Angin, and Ombilin.

Edwin also revealed that cofiring is a tangible manifestation of the corporation's support for PLN in leading the energy transition in Indonesia and encouraging the achievement of the new and renewable energy (NRE) target of 23 percent in the national energy mix by 2025.

"The cofiring program that utilizes biomass is a real step by PLN IP in supporting the energy transition in the PLN Group and helping the government achieve the NRE target in the national energy mix," he said.

Edwin continued that the cofiring program, which utilizes various types of raw materials such as sawdust, palm shells, wood chips, garbage, and banknote waste, makes using these raw materials create multiple impacts on the economy.

Because the community can provide biomass feedstock, it can create new jobs and increase income.

"In maintaining the biomass supply, PLN IP also works with the government and local communities, thus helping to realize a clean, energy-independent Indonesia, and increase national capacity with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles," he said.

According to Edwin, the success of cofiring is just the beginning for PLN Indonesia Power in implementing the energy transition and in the future, PLN will continue to accelerate the energy transition in Indonesia.

"We are preparing various EBT development programs in the electricity sector to realize the energy transition following the target and make PLN the leader of the energy transition," he said.
