TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Indonesia's General Elections Commission (KPU) Hasyim Asy'ari has pledged to trace 3,238 duplicate names in the final voter list (DPT) for registered voters in Malaysia's Johor Bahru.

"Regarding the Malaysian case, we are tracing the reported duplicate names in the DPT," Asy'ari told journalists in response to the finding of Migrant Care, an NGO advocating Indonesian migrant workers' rights.

Speaking to journalists at the KPU office in Jakarta on Friday, Asy'ari said, in tracing the reported duplicate names, the commission's officers would apply a duplicate analysis.

In fact, during the stages of updating voter lists, the KPU personnel at all regional levels had applied duplicate analysis in an effort to avoid duplicate names in the DPTs for voters in Indonesia and abroad.

Asy'ari explained that it was normal for duplicate names to still be found in the DPT, as they handled millions of data entries during the process of updating, verifying, and finalizing the voter lists.

The KPU still opens opportunities to correct duplicate names found in the DPT to prevent irresponsible people from misusing those names for their personal interests, he stated.

To anticipate cases of duplicate names, the KPU will apply a control measure, such as providing attendance sheets for voters at polling booths to ensure their validity, he revealed.

"Thus, the voters should fill out the attendance sheet before casting their votes to ensure their validity as revealed in the DPT," he stated.

ANTARA reported earlier that the KPU decided on July 2, 2023, that around 1,750,474 voters living abroad will cast their votes during the 2024 General Elections.

They will be served by 128 Overseas Elections Committees (PPLNs) and will cast their votes at 828 polling stations through 1,580 mobile voting boxes and 651 postal services.

The KPU also announced that the presidential and parliamentary elections will be held simultaneously across Indonesia on February 14.

The commission has officially set a 75-day election campaign period for the three pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates from November 28, 2023, to February 10, 2024.

Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD are the three pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates that will participate in the presidential race.

Baswedan and Iskandar have been nominated with the support of the NasDem Party, National Awakening Party (PKB), Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), and Ummat Party.

Meanwhile, Subianto and Raka have the backing of the Gerindra Party and a coalition of parties, including Golkar, National Mandate Party (PAN), Democratic Party, and Gelora Party.

Pranowo and Mahfud have the support of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), United Development Party, Perindo Party, and Hanura Party.
