TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - City-owned transportation firm TransJakarta was bombarded with questions and criticism from the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD Jakarta) in a meeting on June 7. One focal point from DPRD member Auhud Alynudin was the reckless driving of some bus drivers.

“What is often complained about is the attitude of the drivers who often recklessly drive over the speed limit,” said Suhud at the DPRD headquarters on June 7, state news agency Antara reported.

The sole aspect motivating some drivers to drive fast is believed to be the company’s program promising passengers a 35-minute drive. Suhud said TransJakarta must never put aside the safety of its passengers.

Another criticism was launched by DPRD Jakarta Commission B secretary Wa Ade Herlina who called for the transportation firm to actively prevent crimes happening aboard TransJakarta buses. Criminal acts such as pickpocketing and sexual harassment have been recorded in the past.

In response to the criticism, TransJakarta assistant of economics and finances Sri Haryati said the company will certainly improve its public service. “Surely we agree with the criticisms and our main focus is to provide the public with the best service,” said Haryati.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta transportation agency deputy Syaripudin responded to driving issues of the bus drivers and pledged to conduct a more stringent monitoring effort to prevent speeding. He also said that TransJakarta bus drivers underwent qualification tests during their services in the company.
