TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police's Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) questioned the head of the Jakarta Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) regarding the process of supervising raw materials for pharmaceutical manufacturers on Monday, March 6. This examination is related to cases of acute kidney injury among children or Atypical Progressive Acute Kidney Failure (GGAPA).

“The summons is intended to gain explanations related to the process of supervising raw materials for pharmaceutical traders,” said the National Police spokesperson Brigadier General Ahmad Ramadhan at the National Police HQ, on Tuesday, March 14.

Ramadhan said Jakarta BPOM was grilled for information about the mechanism of BPOM's supervision of pharmaceutical traders. However, he emphasized that it was not related to negligence in supervision, but was only aimed at matching the findings of evidence in the field.

Meanwhile, Bareskrim is studying vaccines and other paracetamol syrup drugs consumed by children with the disease.

The investigation was launched after the Directorate of Certain Crimes (Dittipidter) took a sample of the Praxion drug to a laboratory for a test. “At present, the police are still investigating other drugs, besides Praxion, that were consumed by the victims including vaccines during immunization and paracetamol syrup,” said Ramadhan.

Previously, BPOM included Praxion on the list of drugs that were safe for consumption. However, it was then withdrawn from circulation as it was suspected to be the cause of a child's death due to acute kidney injury.

After testing Praxion, BPOM stated that the liquid drug is safe for consumption because it does not contain excess ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol.
