TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 4.0 rocked Sukabumi, West Java, on Tuesday evening, February 28, at 20:11:48 local time, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported.

The agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, confirmed that Sukabumi and its vicinity areas were jolted by a tectonic quake. Based on the analysis, the epicenter was detected at 7.03 degrees south latitude and 106.64 degrees east longitude, or precisely on land at a distance of 11 kilometers southeast of Sukabumi Regency. Besides, it was at a depth of 3 kilometers.

“It was a shallow quake triggered by the activity of the Cimandiri Fault,” Daryono reported.

The shaking was felt in Sukabumi City areas, Pelabuhan Ratu, with an intensity scale of II - III MMI. In Bogor, Lebak, and Bayah, the tremor was felt weaker at MMI level II.

BMKG stated that until now, there have been no reports of damage to buildings as a result of the quake. As of 20:30 WIB, the agency did not detect any aftershock activity.

On the BMKG’s social media account, a number of residents confirmed that they could feel the shaking. Some even said that they heard a rumbling sound when the earthquake occurred.
