TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta areas having the potential for a land movement that may lead to landslides increased by five in January 2023 from ten in December 2022 due to extreme weather, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has reported.

“People are advised to anticipate the potential for ground movement when rainfall intensity is above normal,” said the Jakarta BPBD head Isnawa Adji in Jakarta, Tuesday, January 10, 2023, as quoted from Antara.

Based on data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), there are several areas categorized in the intermediate hazard zone of landslides.

The 15 areas are in Central Jakarta (Menteng), Jakarta Selatan (Cilandak, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Baru, Kebayoran Lama, Mampang Prapatan, Pancoran, Pasar Minggu, Pesanggrahan, and Tebet), and East Jakarta (Cakung, Kramat Jati, Matraman, Pasar Rebo and Pulo Gadung).

The additional five areas are Tebet, Menteng, Matraman, Pulo Gadung, and Cakung.

According to Jakarta BPBD, ground movement in the intermediate zone can occur if rainfall intensity is above normal. This has the potential to occur especially in areas bordering river valleys and road cliffs.

Jakarta BPBD called for this anticipation after the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted that the peak of the rainy season in the capital city would take place in January-February 2023.

The public is also asked to be vigilant against hydrometeorological disasters, such as heavy rains, floods, landslides, and strong winds.

Jakarta BPBD also urged people to inform the impact of natural disasters through the Jakarta Kini (JaKi) mobile application.

In an emergency, people in need of help may reach the Jakarta Siaga Call Center 112. Jakarta BPBD has 267 personnel in the rapid response team (TRC) to deal with the impact of natural disasters across the city.
