West Java Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 162; Dozens Still Trapped

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The major earthquake that hit West Java’s Cianjur has claimed the lives of 162 people, according to a report by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Monday evening (20:00 Indonesia Western Time|WIB). The earthquake was logged at magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale, followed by multiple aftershocks.

At least two dozen people are believed to be still trapped under rubbles of the thousands of homes and public facilities that collapsed during the earthquake on Monday noon.

In a statement from the BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari, the local residents who perished came from multiple villages in the area “Rancagoong Village in Cilau District, Limbansari Village in Cianjur District, and Cugenang District.”

According to a report from the agency, there are 326 people injured with 13,784 people who have been moved to refugee camps scattered in multiple locations.

At the Cianjur Regency alone, authorities recorded 2,345 damaged houses, 1 Islamic boarding school was severely damaged, 1 Cianjur Hospital was slightly damaged, 8 units of government buildings were damaged, 10 units of educational facilities were damaged, and 3 units of worship facilities were damaged.

"The earthquake also caused landslides which closed the provincial highway in Cianjur Regency," he said.

Apart from Cianjur Regency, infrastructure damage was also recorded in Bogor Regency where 46 houses were damaged, 443 damaged houses at Sukabumi Regency, and 14 houses were ruined at Sukabumi City.
