TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture of Indonesia said that 46 people died after a strong earthquake in West Java's Cianjur Regency, Monday, November 21, 2022. The 5.6-magnitude earthquake also injured hundreds, damaged buildings, and caused landslides.

"As of 16:15 Western Indonesia Time, the number of casualties had reached 46 and more than 100 people were injured," the ministry's assistant deputy for emergency and post-disaster management Nelwan Harahap told ANTARA in Jakarta, Monday, November 21, 2022.

Nelwan said that the ministry has coordinated with a number of related parties to dispatch a team of health workers to the disaster area. "The plan for tonight is to send 10 doctors and 20 nurses from the Ministry of Health and the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC)," he said.

For logistical assistance, refugee tents, family tents, and blankets, he said, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture has coordinated with the BNPB and the Ministry of Social Affairs.

"Tonight, aid will be sent to disaster areas to make sure that the evacuees have all the basic necessities," he added.

The 5.6-magnitude earthquake was centered on land, 10 km southwest of Cianjur Regency, West Java Province at 13:21 WIB.

A study by inaRISK revealed that 32 sub-districts in Cianjur Regency have the potential to experience moderate to high earthquake hazard potentials.
