TEMPO.CO, JakartaA 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook Papua Pegunungan or Papua Mountains this morning, June 21. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake was centered on land at 09:11 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIB).

Based on the initial data, the epicenter was located 68 kilometers northeast of Yalimo at a depth of 78 kilometers.

The shaking intensity was measured on the II-III MMI scale in Wamena, meaning that it was felt indoors like a truck was passing by. The weaker intensity of the II MMI scale was reported in Jayapura City and Jayapura Regency.

Daryono, head of the agency’s quake and tsunami center, said in a written statement that the tremor was triggered by the deformation of rocks in the earth's crust. The quake’s magnitude was also updated to 5.5.

On Thursday evening, the BMKG also recorded two earthquakes in Central Maluku and Bawean in East Java, with magnitudes of 2.6 and 3.6, respectively. The quake in Saparua, Central Maluku, occurred at 21:31 local time and was centered at sea. Meanwhile, the tremor in Bawean was detected at 19:41 local time and was also centered at sea.
