4.0-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts West Sumatra's Padang Panjang on Monday Morning, BMKG Reports

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAn earthquake with 4.0 magnitude jolted Padang Panjang and its surrounding areas in West Sumatra this morning on Monday, June 10, 2024. 

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG said the quake’s epicenter was located on land 15 kilometers northwest of Padang Panjang at a 10-kilometer depth. The earthquake occurred at 05:54 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time).

"This earthquake was shallow and caused by the Sianok Fault’s activity,” said the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono.

The rocking was felt the strongest in Padang Panjang, at MMI III scale, akin to trucks passing by. In areas such as Bukittinggi, Padang Pariaman, and Agam, the earthquake was felt on the II-III MMI scale.

BMKG noted that the Padang Panjang earthquake was the second of the day after the midnight 4.2-magnitude quake in Pangandaran, West Java. 

According to preliminary information from BMKG, the Pangandaran earthquake was centered at sea, 82 kilometers southwest of Pangandaran Regency with a 43-kilometer depth.
