BMKG: 5.7M Earthquake Strikes Bengkulu

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.5-magnitude earthquake rocked the west coast of Bengkulu this morning, June 5. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded it at 09:20 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
The strongest shaking was felt in Mukomuko at the MMI III-IV intensity scale. “This quake has no tsunami potential,” the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, said in a statement.
He said that based on the analysis results, the quake’s epicenter was located in the sea at a distance of 141 kilometers southwest of Mukomuko-, with a depth of 20 kilometers.
“It was a shallow quake caused by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plate,” Daryono added.
Apart from Mukomuko, the shaking was also felt in Argamakmur in North Bengkulu, Kerinci in West Sumatra, and Sungai Banyak in Jambi at a lower intensity scale.
BMKG stated that it has not yet recorded any aftershocks. However, the public is advised to remain calm and avoid cracked or damaged buildings. “Check and ensure that the building where you live in is earthquake resistant enough, or that there is no damage caused by the quake that could endanger the stability of the building before returning to your home.”
