TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - People flocked the courtyard of Jakarta Theater in Taman Ismail Marzuki, South Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon to witness the total lunar eclipse. The phenomenon known as Blood Moon is visible starting at 17:43 Jakarta time as the moon rises.

“It can be seen by all observers in Indonesian regions,” said Widya Sawitar, an astronomer at the Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory, as quoted from Antara, Monday, November 7, 2022.

Based on astronomical calculations, she explained that the phenomenon starts at 15:02:17 and until 20:56:08 western Indonesian time (WIB).

“However, once again, Jakarta residents can only see the total lunar eclipse clearly after the moon rises on the eastern horizon at 17:43 WIB,” she underlined.

The whole process lasts 5 hours, 53 minutes, and 51 seconds and the total eclipse phase occurs for one hour, 24 minutes, and 58 seconds. Besides, the moon is exposed to the earth's umbra for three hours, 07 minutes, and 25 seconds.

According to Widya, today’s lunar eclipse is categorized as Blood Moon, unlike the phenomenon on May 26, 2021, which was declared as Super Blood Moon, or on January 31, 2018, which was announced as Super Blue Blood Moon.

“It is only Blood Moon. The term ‘super’ is due to the perigee, a condition when the moon’s orbit is closest to the earth, the term 'blue' is because it is the second full moon in a month, and the term 'blood' because of the red color of the moon's disk during the phase [of the total lunar eclipse],” the astronomer explained.
