BMKG Confirms Upcoming Total Lunar Eclipse on 8th November

2 November 2022 08:38 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the total lunar eclipse can be observed from Indonesia on November 8, 2022. “It will last for 1 hour, 25 minutes, and 44 seconds,” as quoted from the agency’s page on Wednesday, November 2, 2022.

A lunar eclipse is an event when the sunlight is blocked by the earth from reaching the moon. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon, the sun, and the earth are aligned. This causes the moon to move into the earth's umbra. As a result, the moon will appear red when the peak of the eclipse occurs.

Andi Pangerang, a researcher of aeronautics and space at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), said previously that all regions of Indonesia except Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Bengkulu could observe the peak of the total lunar eclipse.

“The impact of a total lunar eclipse on human life is that the tides are higher than normal days when there is no eclipse, full moon, or new moon,” he explained.

The Total Lunar Eclipse Will Appear Again in 2025

According to an astronomy activist from the Bandung Komunitas Langit Selatan, Avivah Yamani, the upcoming phenomenon will be the final total lunar eclipse this year as it will only appear again in the next three years.

“It's not phenomenal, but this is the last total lunar eclipse and there will only occur again in 2025," she said on Sunday, October 30, 2022, adding that Indonesia will see partial and penumbral lunar eclipses in 2023 and 2024.
