TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muhammadiyah and the government had different dates for this year’s Eid al-Adha. Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organization had previously declared the day of sacrifice on July 9, 2022.

The Religious Affairs Ministry, meanwhile, decided it on July 10 during the isbat or confirmation meeting held on Wednesday, June 29.

General Secretary of Muhammadiyah Abdul Mu'ti said his side will still celebrate the Eid on Saturday, July 9, 2022. “Based on the reckoning of the hilal (crescent moon),” said Abdul when contacted by Tempo, Thursday, June 30, 2022.

He thus called on the government to give freedom and guarantees for the worship practice of Muslims who carry out the annual prayer at a different time from that set by the government.

“The Eid al-Adha prayer is part of the mahdlah worship which is performed in accordance with individual beliefs guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution,” Abdul explained.

Abdul said Muhammadiyah will hold the prayer in the open field if the weather is sunny or otherwise, it will take place at mosques.

“The Eid al-Adha prayer is carried out in compliance with health protocols, as well as with respect to Muslims undergoing the Arafah fast and performing the prayer on Sunday, July 10, 2022,” he added.
