TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-run railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) confirmed that it will take legal action against the driver of the car that collided with the KRL or Commuter Line train in Cipayung district, Depok City.

KAI’s spokesman Joni Martinus said the company lamented the negligence of the road user who did not prioritize the passing of trains which caused disruption and hampered public activities in the morning rush hour.

“KAI will sue the car driver to hold him accountable for his negligence as he didn’t prioritize train travel, causing damage to facilities and disruption to travel [schedules],” said Joni in a press statement received by Tempo, Thursday, April 21.

Previously reported, a car driven by a man was hit by a Commuter Line train on a railway crossing on Jalan Rawa Geni, Cipayung district on Wednesday morning, April 20. The man, fortunately, survived albeit the car was squeezed by the train and the crossing gate and was dragged for approximately 10 meters.

Joni explained that the car driver violated Article 124 of Law 23 of 2007 concerning Railways and Article 114 of Law 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation.

“All road users must prioritize train travel when passing level crossings,” he underlined.

To increase the safety of train travel, KAI along with the Transportation Ministry’s Directorate of Transportation Safety and local territories immediately closed the railway crossing to prevent a similar incident from recurring.
